Paper Weight and Finishes Explained

Confused by GSM, lb, Text, and Cover stocks? We demystify paper weights and finishes so you can choose the perfect feel for your project.

Text vs. Cover Stock

Text Stock is thinner paper, used for the inside pages of books. Think generic copy paper (20lb Bond) up to high-quality magazine pages (100lb Gloss Text).

Cover Stock is thick cardstock, used for book covers, business cards, and postcards. 10pt to 16pt are common thicknesses.

Coating Options

  • Gloss: Shiny and reflective. Makes colors pop. Great for photos and comics.
  • Matte: subtle sheen, smooth texture. Professional and glare-free.
  • Uncoated: Natural paper feel. Best for journals or books you need to write in.
